HAI PHONG, 8 February 2017: Vietnam National Administration of Tourism says Hai Phong will be a major driver to increase economic development and tourism in northern Vietnam.

Local media quoted VNAT’s Travel Department head, Nguyen Quy Phuong, saying the city should also improve management skills to  conduct tourism activities.

To that end, Hai Phong should revamp the Municipal Tourism Department, ensuring it has enough human resources and can lead the city’s development plans.

At the same time, it is necessary to spearhead tourism products, such as leisure tourism on Cat Ba Island, the tourism chief said.

Experts also suggested Hai Phong should connect with other localities to promote tourism products for the northern coastal region.

The northern port city should welcome 5.7 million tourists this year, according to VNAT, based on figures for 2016 that showed 5.6 million tourists visited Hai Phong last year.

Hai Phong is located 102 km from the capital Hanoi and is a major commercial port for northern Vietnam. The main airport serving Hai Phong is Cat Bi International Airport.
